After Death You're Aware that You've Died, Scientist Say

Death just became even more scary: scientists say people are aware they’re dead because their consciousness continues to work after the body has stopped showing signs of life. That means that, theoretically, someone may even hear their own death being announced by medics.
The claim was made by Dr Sam Parnia, director of critical care and resuscitation research at NYU Langone School of Medicine in New York City.

He and his team are looking at people who suffered cardiac arrest, technically died, but were later revived. It’s the largest study of its type ever carried out. Some of those studied say they had awareness of full conversations and seeing things that were going on around them, even after they were pronounced dead.

These accounts were then verified by the medical and nursing staff who were present at the time. Death is defined as the point at which the heart no longer beats, and blood flow to the brain is cut off.

Dr Sam Parnia said:
“Technically, that's how you get the time of death – it's all based on the moment when the heart stops. Once that happens, blood no longer circulates to the brain, which means brain function halts almost instantaneously. You lose all your brain stem reflexes – your gag reflex, your pupil reflex, all that is gone.”

However, there’s evidence to suggest that there’s a burst of brain energy as someone dies. In 2013 researchers at the University of Michigan looked at the electrical signals inside the brains of nine anaesthetised rats having an induced heart attack. They saw activity patterns which are linked to a “hyper-alerted state” in the brief period after clinical death.

Dr Parnia said:
“In the same way that a group of researchers might be studying the qualitative nature of the human experience of 'love', for instance, we're trying to understand the exact features that people experience when they go through death, because we understand that this is going to reflect the universal experience we're all going to have when we die.”

  1. If there is any loss of consciousness during the change called death,it is only a brief one, as brief or briefer than a night's sleep. Many of the departed do not know at the time what has really happened to them and still believe themselves to be physically alive. For they find themselves apparently able to see others and hear voices and touch things just as before. Yet all these experiences are entirely immaterial, and take place within a conscious mind that has no fleshly brain///

    1. I am Kola Olukotun and posted the above comment from my study of Philosophy. It is really heartening that science is gradually catching up with what philosophy had known for eons. Unfortunately science always suppresses the subject while studying the object. The observer can never be separated from the observation///

    2. I just went through this experience in the last 30 days in ICU where I died zi could hear and see the doctors talking to my husband but I could not move or talk. I was necessitated and brought back. I was talking with my team of doctors after all this and they were and very interested in my experience and said they have been studying and researching this as well. This is a mother break through for medical history as we know it. I ow have a whole new respect and look on life.

    3. Did you lose any fear (supposing you had fears prior to this) about dying?

  2. Agreed. If the whole truth were known, that would certainly crumble the theories of religion, life, and death. We continue on, not just in a brief moment after death.

    1. No conflict with Buddhism. So it wouldn’t crumble. Buddhism doesn’t believe that the mind is the brain, and states that consciousness continues.

    2. No conflict with Christianity either. The Bible teaches the body is just the body and the spirit lives on. Believers are instantly in heaven - which many believe is just another dimension that we who are still in our earthly bodies can't see - but those who've passed from this earthly life continue to see everything.

John 3:16. You will have ever lasting life in Heaven with you saved loved ones who have gone before you. Make sure your name is written in the Lambs Book Of Life.

    4. Confused. In what way does this "crush" belief? If anything, it affirms it. The Bible as well as other beliefs talk all the time of the soul, the non-material self, continuing on after physical death. Care to elaborate because it isn't making sense.

    5. Really, did you bother to read the article before you proclaimed god? Nothing religious or philosophical here.

Just evidence of a material brains last spark.

To go from that to god did it is narrow minded!

Religion is destroying the planet as people are more interested in living eternally with god! Instead of living in the here and now...

      Fail...

  3. Religions are just ancient science that has lost its true meanings. If you research religions, they give us clues, it just takes a unique person with a lot of knowledge to realize what they are saying.

    1. Religion can't be reconciled with science. Science attempts to uncover the true nature of reality through empirical inquiry; religion is a collection of fictions created by humans. There is absolutely no evidence that any religion is grounded in truth. And it's a zero-sum game; even IF one religion was true, the rest collapse because religions are mutually incompatible dogmas. Religious dogmatism is an ancient human construct created to try to make sense of our circumstance and to maintain social order. It is the antithesis of science.

    2. Actually...no...what you call "religion"... which in your view appears to be something akin to a fairy tale... whereas actual biblical faith...is firmly rooted in actual reality and factual history. It's just that many people simply refuse to accept the hard truths of the bible because they demand accountability
The bible is painfully honest about the true state of humans throughout history. And it lines up perfectly with the daily headlines in just about every nook and cranny of the world. The truths that man is sinful and is in need of redemption. That Jesus Christ, an actual historical figure 2000 yrs ago was crucified for our sins and rose on the third day and that when we shed this mortal coil we will one day meet our Maker and our eternal fate rests on hownwe respond to these facts. Biblical faith is very sobering, much to the bdisappointment of Karl Marx who referred to it as the opiate of the people. Wrong - lack of belief is the opiate... it leads us into a false sense of security when without Christ our future is anything but.

    3. There is more than one path to God, whether you are a Christian or not. God loves us all no matter what religion we go by on earth. We are all one and we all deserve to be here and then there. We are the Human Race and spiritual beings dealing with being human beings. I keep an open mind to all possibilities. Life is a mystery. Hopefully the full knowledge and enlightenment will come when our spirits pass onto the other side. I almost left the earth plane once after taking a handful of pills while in despair. I was not aware of anything. Just a total nothing. It was just darkness and no memory of anything. Many people die and go through the light and are greeted by Angels or relatives. Some people hang around and are tortured souls.

Did thousands of those followers of their God SEE their Lord for 40 days AFTER his resurrection?

When a religion keeps it quiet, is non-evangelical in nature or does not actively pursue to clue others in... that's where the skepticism should creep in.

On a side note... there is zero force with in Christianity. Zero force in sharing your heartfelt beliefs with another person. Zero force in caring for others wanting them to have the same experience.

Wanted you to know I love you so much" then he was gone. I can't deny that God, Jesus and the Holy Ghost are real!!!

  10. This research, to me, reconfirms what I already know...that many of us have a soul that continues when our earthy body ceases. I am a Christian, & I believe the consciousness that is present after death IS our Spirit. I am not a theologian, so cannot speak for what other people with other faiths believe, but in my church we have a saying, "God loves you, and there's nothing you can do about it." One thing is for sure, however; we will all ... someday... learn what IS on the other side of life on earth.

  14. I am always amazed by people who say Christians are arrogant because they believe Christianity is the true path. Well duh!!!! if they didnt believe it was the truth, they would be a different religion. What I find odd is they never say negative things about Muslims and in some parts of the world, they will kill you if you dont accept their religion. Jews, Christians, Muslins, Hindus, etc., all believe they are right. Atheists believe they are right. The person who made that comment about Christians thinking they are right thinks he/she is right. Does that make you arrogant, too. The reason Christians believe its the true path is because Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through me Although some Christians are uncomfortable with this and will say there are many paths to God but that is not Biblical. Muslims believe the only recognized religion in the sight of God is Islam. Then there are the Jews, Hindus, etc etc. You dont have to resort to insults just because people think different than you do

  15. Jesus Christ... Let's please keep Christianity out of this. I'm tired of naive Christians shoving their bullshit up peoples throats as if they'd been there and done that.

I'm reading an article here that bases first hand experiences from nurses and doctors to understand what one experiences during death. Jesus Christ isn't fucking rising from his grave in this article to save a human being.

  17. The article doesn't say you hang around forever. LMAO! Maybe a brief moment of consciousness that is all but no evidence of anything else. It has nothing to do with Jesus or Buddha or any of the other made up religions or fairy tales. It makes sense that an article like this would bring lots of fearful Christians stating their philosophies on heaven and hell. The article only talks about the few moments after clinical death when your heart stops beating but you could still be revived. You could still be revived....so you're not really truly dead. They are so desperate to believe that there's an afterlife and will you hang around eternally. They don't even understand what eternity means...forever and ever waving palm branches to appease some vain Creator who demands worship 24/7. I had a near-death experience when I was 5 years old. I fell in the water. I saw myself floating in the water, like somebody's grandmother. These are all aberrations of the human mind as it is being deprived of oxygen. In a way it's a comfort. The next thing I knew my dad had me up in the air by my feet and water was gushing out of my mouth. Stop making everything you hear about religion. I'm sure it's a wonderful thing so make it private thing and keep it to yourself. Go see the new Mr. Rogers movie and learn to be a Christian without wearing it all over your sleeve.

  18. Sorry folks. This does NOT confirm that consciousness continues past a few seconds after death. Blood flow stops immediately. The brain might have a few calories to utilize. When they are used, with no new blood supply, then the only thing to say is, "We don't know what happens to consciousness." Sure, religious philosophies say it continues, but there is NO evidence for this. Those philosophies are purely conjecture, and other conjectures could reasonably say that consciousness then ends forever. Sorry.

After the great test is over and the earth is restored to a paradise. Importantly we need to be loving and kind in this one to get in. ( as best we can with what we have). Revelation 21:4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[a] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

  25. Christians may seem or come off as arrogant because they believe Christianity is the true path. IF we did not believe it was the truth, we would be find a different faith or have faith in 'science' which has its working theories, and "it was good science, at that time" is always a fun phrase to hear when a pioneer in 'science' rationalizes their past ooopsies ? Islaam has a historical habit of involking the death penalty to those that won't join the 'jihad' when the majority is reached in a political area or country, where that has happened in some parts of the world, they will kill you if you dont accept their program or you have Demi semi-slave status 2nd class status until you are given the convert or die choice. Absoute power tends to corrupt absolutely & that seems to happen in various groups of human monsters societies in the name of science, well not many examples but good evidence it WILL happen too if a scientific dictatorship takes over. Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, etc., all believe they are right. Atheists believe they are right. Those who made that comment about Christians thinking they are right thinks he/she is right. Doesn't that make you arrogant, too??? The reason Christians believe its the true path is because YeshuAH[Jesus] said, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through me, and to find Yeshuah's straight and narrow path, you cannot use Christians as exmples, same with Islamic Muslims you end up with a flawed view of the teachings, which are in the SOURCE TEXTS , CATHOLICS did not create or write the bible, no ONE prophet did, Catholics are ONE editor of the LATIN texts back in 300AD, there's other ancient autorities beyond the dead sea scrolls too. The Biggest filter was the babalonia captivity of the HEBREWS (from the other side of the river) Jews some indicators point to many are not who they think they are, filtered through Kazaria/Kazakhstan a Jewish State well many years prior to the 1948 alleged fulfillment, and that is what most CHRISTIANS need to look at, what WAS and has been fulfilled rather than all the supposedly unfulfilled or suspended 70th week of Daniel goblidebook, FAITH is the key and we must answer to or for that faith. Increase faith by looking at who was spoken to and WHEN and how those time statements point to fulfillment, increase faith and it is easier to answer for it. The enemies of your faith have many traps and snares set up to tear down your faith and salvation. IF these be THE LAST DAYS then what is the strong delusion and who are those that say they are Gene Simmons fans but are not ? LOL, if you read this far need a laugh, if you don't know are you under the delusion or is it not the Last Days and there is a enemy of the faith out to destroy your faith. Seriously look at how he is in his Kingdom, not of this Earth (or age) and consider you Athiests the Pascal's Wager again. You end up with a really wierd Jesus if you watch what 'christians' do, it is not the same with Muslims, you need to look at the SOuRCE TEXTS and use them to see what is included in the Faith, and what is a external construct. Islam is not just the koran, sadith and surah, that's where you find it is not a religeon of peace, but much nightmare violence , a enemy of knowlege. At least the Vatican kept much rather that burn it all that was not about islam , even if kept hidden in their collections. Everything becomes corrupted by men(or women)with too much power too many historical examples to say otherwise, it will be no different with a 'scientific dictatorship' as IKE warned of.
